When the going gets tough
During their 24 years running a gift shop in Macclesfield husband and wife team Beatrice and Terry Butler have seen many changes in the market, but none quite as profound as those they are currently experiencing. So what are the particular challenges they face and how are they adapting to meet them.
GIFT OF THE YEAR
Reaping the rewards of the Gift of the Year
Winning a Gift of the Year brings far more than simply a trophy for your office. As this year’s winners testify this accolade brings tangible commercial benefits and provides a long-lasting boost to your business.
PEOPLE
GA chief executive Isabel Martinson and Chairman Michael Sweeney have been training hard for their forthcoming charity cycle ride in aid of charity ‘Help for Heroes’, the national charity which supports soldiers injured in the recent conflicts in the Middle East. They are both cycling 350 miles around Belgium and Holland in just five days starting on 14 October.
Two members of The Giftware Association, Asobi and Junction 18 have announced that in future Asobi’s range of eco-friendly toys are to be stored and distributed by Junction 18 from its Warminster distribution centre.
Sarah Large and her new assistant, Laura Mallabar has joined The GA team to run our membership department. They look forward to meeting you at the autumn shows.
TRADE FAIRS
This issue’s look at the trade fair scene includes news of Autumn Fair International, where exhibitors are up and a new jewellery and accessories catwalk is among the attractions and a preview of Top DrawerAutumn and its new sister show London Gift Fair which launches with some great discounts for buyers. There’s good news too from Giving and Living where, with five months to go, sales are already 5% up on last year.
CHAIRMAN’S THOUGHTS
As the industry shapes up for the autumn shows and what are universally acknowledged as the best months of the gift and home year, GA Chairman Michael Sweeney looks ahead to what 2011 may bring.
